| Pippa Blake takes as a starting point the Emsworth Estuary where she lives. This new work has evolved from her artist-in residency at the gallery last autumn where she begun to explore the effects of violent weather patterns. The six new works all entitled "The sea and the sky and the sky and the sea", loosely reflect views of the estuary under different lights and weather effects. The works in this show pave the way to a major exhibition for Blake in the Sussex Barn at West Dean College to be held this autumn which continues her exploration of the sea. She uses the sea as a metaphor for humanity exploring its dark and threatening side alongside the drama and poetry associated with it. This August she will travel from Newfoundland to Iceland on an expedition linked to the National Oceanographic Institute to enable her to study extreme weather conditions. |
