Eliza Meath Baker

Eliza Meath Baker has painted an intimate series of birds and lambs for the exhibition. She works on a gesso ground layering the paint surface with tiny strokes which gives the surface a luminous quality. Meath Baker turned to these new images to distant herself from the descriptive qualities of figure painting. She has explored the formal properties of a single object isolated in space. The image of a bird comes from childhood memories of the rapid and uncritical drawing and discarding of multi-coloured creatures. She is also interested in graffiti art and has consciously borrowed from its emblematic nature in the simplicity of these paintings.
